Crucible Ignitor is a startup studio that matches federal and university technologies with entrepreneur teams to build dual-use companies through incorporation and licensing. Now entering its fourth year, the program pairs teams with Department of War (DoW) and university lab technologies at a technology readiness level (TRL) of 3 to 4, and supports them through the work of turning that technology into a company. Drawing inspiration from the U.S. Marines' Crucible challenge, the program channels resilience, critical thinking, and determination into the practical work of building a company from the ground up.
Running virtually from January 11 to March 31, 2027, this 11-week program guides entrepreneurs through customer discovery and pitch development, ending in a recommendation to incorporate, license the technology, pivot, or pass. Teams work closely with inventors, technology transfer, subject matter experts, and advisors with hands-on defense and startup experience, learning firsthand how the DoW works with small businesses. Structured curriculum and advising help entrepreneurs build their company, understand the technology they're licensing, and find their pathway into the Department of Navy and broader DoW ecosystem.
Successful teams form new companies, license technologies, and develop solutions with impact across government and commercial markets. The program includes an optional in-person Final Pitch Event in April 2027 and an optional Warfighting Innovation Summit in February 2027, both in Inland Southern California. Reimbursable travel stipends are provided.
Crucible Ignitor has helped launch 35 new ventures serving both government and commercial needs.

About the Navy Tech Bridge Network
Regional Tech Bridges help Naval leaders address operational challenges with solutions that can scale globally. This connected network of innovation hubs enhances collaboration between Naval Labs, industry, academia, and other military organizations.
When the Navy takes on a new effort, the Tech Bridges serve as technology scouts, local networking hubs, and connection points to Naval Warfare Centers and Labs to make sure the best possible technology is brought to the table for consideration.
These strategically located teams offer a more easily accessible way for the Department of the Navy to foster collaboration, build productive partnerships, and speed delivery of solutions to sailors and Marines. Tech Bridges are an essential link between Naval technologists and local startup ecosystems across the country — and around the world.
