Our Story
FedTech was born in 2015 after participating in the National Science Foundation's Innovation Corps (I-Corps) program when we saw an opportunity to commercialize the ~$150B/year in federally-funded R&D. Many inventions we use today were created as part of a federally-funded R&D project including what we know today as SIRI, Google Maps, GPS, the internet, baby formula, lithium-ion batteries, smartphone cameras, and countless more. The FedTech team consists of seasoned entrepreneurs; early-stage startup investors, advisors and mentors; former U.S. government leaders in the rapid innovation space; former CXOs; and all-stars. Our primary sponsor, the National Security Innovation Network (formerly known as MD5), works to build networks of innovators that generate new solutions to national security problems.
We iterated on different concepts before landing on the most effective way to move cutting-edge technology from the bench to the marketplace as fast as possible: the Startup Studio. The Startup Studio is a unique private venture program, funded by federal agencies and corporate partners, that connects entrepreneurs to technologies developed across DoD, NASA, DOE, DOI, DOT, top-tier universities, corporate R&D arms and other laboratories. We run multiple cohorts per year where successful applicants are paired with lab partners/inventors to serve as founders. Teams work closely with teaching and mentor teams and are taken through modules on lean startup, business models, product development, customer discovery, intellectual property and licensing, funding strategies for spinning out R&D, pitch skills, and more.
This is the most founder-friendly program in the world given that the entrepreneurs pay nothing and give up 0% equity, since we are fully funded by the research organizations we work with.
After the cohort, many of the teams choose to start companies and FedTech continues to work with the best of these post-cohort through the Pre-Accelerator. Regardless of the outcome, all the companies are given a unique experience to further develop their high tech companies through mentorship, advisors, funding opportunities and much more.
